Review of The One Kingdom (The Swans’ War Book One) by Sean Russell

Well, this guy's got an excellent first name … This feels very much like the first part in a larger story: it lays down a lot of backstory about the antipathy between two noble families, the history of the land, the legendary characters. Counterbalancing that is the fact that not that much seems to happen in 700+ pages and the end is inconclusive. The characters are all portrayed well (although the females were a touch less convincing, I thought). More importantly, perhaps (particularly for this type of novel), the plot was very well structured: pretty much all the characters have exactly as much 'page time' as they deserve (although the first chapter doesn't focus on the main character). The only problem with this judiciousness is that I forgot who a couple of the minor characters were and what they had done previously by the time they finally received another viewpoint chapter. On the whole, an enjoyable read (with a nice avian leitmotif running through it), if not outstanding.
