I happened upon this word in R Scott Bakker’s The Warrior-Prophet.

banderole noun 1 a long narrow flag, usually with a forked end. 2 a flat ribbon-like band carved into a stone wall, etc with writing on it.
ETYMOLOGY: 16c: French.
